The Advantages of Three-Dimensional Radiography and Your Treatment

The advantages of three dimensional radiography and your treatment blog

When you need endodontic treatment, getting an accurate diagnosis is key. Traditional X-rays have long been valuable, giving your dentist a two-dimensional view of your teeth and surrounding areas. But adding cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) takes radiography to the next level.

Let’s take a look at a few advantages of using CBCT to get a complete three-dimensional picture of what is happening below the surface.

Understanding Three-Dimensional Radiography

CBCT imaging uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam that captures multiple images as the scanner rotates around your head. The system then combines these images to create a detailed, three-dimensional view of your teeth, roots, jawbone, and surrounding structures. This is much different from the flat images provided in traditional dental X-rays.

The complete picture from multiple angles can help endodontists, especially in complex situations.

A Detailed Diagnosis

Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of 3D radiography is the level of detail it can provide. Some problems can be difficult or nearly impossible to identify when you cannot see clearly below the surface. And when using a conventional X-ray, structures can overlap. Dental professionals may have an idea of what is going on based on the symptoms, but they do not have a clear picture.

Details are important. With a CBCT, all those missing pieces can come together.

More Precise Treatment Planning

Every tooth is different, and root canals are not all created equal. Some may curve, branch, or contain anatomical features that are not obvious on a 2D image. So, being able to view the inside features allows us to determine the best way to approach the endodontic treatment. We can even identify areas that require special attention so that we are prepared for whatever may arise.

The use of CBCT improves visualization and precision throughout treatment.

Preserve Your Natural Tooth

Our goal as your endodontist is to preserve natural teeth whenever possible. With detailed diagnostic information, more informed decisions can be made about treatment, tailoring it to your specific needs.

The American Association of Endodontists notes that CBCT can provide valuable information for addressing endodontic conditions. When it comes to preserving your natural tooth, imaging in 3D can help us determine if endodontic treatment is necessary or if another approach may be more ideal.

Do You Need a 3D Scan?

Regardless of how beneficial the CBCT scans are, not every patient is going to need one. We will recommend it based on your symptoms, clinical findings, and the type of treatment being considered. If additional information is needed to provide you with the highest level of care, 3D imaging is often the go-to.

We regularly use advanced technology as part of a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment. And sometimes that may involve a CBCT scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CBCT imaging different from a regular dental X-ray?

Yes. A traditional X-ray produces a two-dimensional image while a CBCT creates a three-dimensional image of the teeth. It allows us to take a closer look at what is going on beneath the surface.

Why might I need a 3D scan for a root canal?

A CBCT scan can help us to identify complex root anatomy, infection, fractures, or other issues that may not be clearly visible on a conventional X-ray.

Is a CBCT scan safe?

CBCT scans use radiation to create detailed images. However, it is a limited amount and is deemed safe. Nonetheless, we only use these types of X-rays when it is appropriate for your care and treatment.

Does getting a 3D scan hurt?

No. CBCT imaging is non-invasive. You must simply remain still while the scanner works to capture the images.

Will I need a CBCT scan for every endodontic treatment?

Not necessarily. We will take your symptoms, examination, and circumstances into consideration before deciding whether or not a CBCT scan is warranted.
